The Male Inferiority ComplexMen also suffer from inferiority complexes. Most of them are not prepared to talk about it, who does, but real or imagined shortcomings and inadequacies are often the cause of shyness, lack of friends, financial difficulties and a withdrawal from society. Ugly or missing teeth, being short, balding or having a small penis are often reasons for feeling inferior. Some men may have no problems with any of these, whereas others become extremely inhibited and develop strategies to avoid showing their weaknesses. One group represses smiling, never speaks and are soon considered to be antisocial. Even in a job application a smiling face is preferred to one with closed lips. Another group avoids parties and dances because they are afraid no-one will find them attractive enough to ask them to dance. Yet another group avoids public toilets in case anyone laughs at them. This can cause problems with the bladder and even kidney stones. If the inferiority complex is caused by a medical condition such as excessive perspiration, baldness or a stutter help can be found by making an appointment at a specialist. These doctors have psychological training and can see the whole man with all his problems. Sometimes the reason for the inferiority complex is a twisted self perception. More and more men from all age groups, especially the more sporty, suffer from this. They think themselves too fat or too clumsy leading to eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia and also to excessive sport. It is especially difficult for these men to recognise and combat their problems. If the condition is particularly intense a visit to a psychologist may be necessary. Another group suffers from their low social status – unemployed, low-paid or unattractive jobs. The resulting low self-esteem causes insecure behaviour, blocking all chancesof improving the situation and getting a better job. Once caught in this vicious circle, it is very difficult to break out. It is important not to accept an inferiority complex and try to live with it. The first step back to a normal life is to recognise it and tackle the problem. |
