Sports car - phallic symbol of modernity

Money means power, power makes sexy. This opinion's still going strong, but if you take a closer look at this, it may not seem completely right. It is true that most people are not free of a certain craving for recognition and they are trying to get this while showing off their belongings. This goes for real estate as well as for designer clothes, expesive high-tech-supplies and for the German's favorite toy: His car. Especially if it is a beautiful, fast-driving, red-colored sports car. Men are known for comparing their power in terms of horsepower. Who has the loudest, biggest, best? This does not only go for the motor, it can also be the exhaust pipe or cubic capacity: The man with the loudest, biggest, best one is the most masculine, most powerfull man.

Athleticism and drive measured in terms of small, racy cars.

In the Stone Age men killed animals and dressed in their furs to show their strength and masculinity. Today men try to use their car for the same matter: show off masculinity, strength and virility. A lot of people go deep into debt, only to be able to buy an expensive, racy sports car. All of this, because people think, a better car makes them a better person and sports cars are said to prove juvenileness and wealth. There are situations in which you can see that men do not feel comfortable in slower cars - for example, if men have to borrow the cars of their wives. They even change their driving behavior when driving these cars. A man has to be very self-confident to handle this situation:

Some men are even called "wimp" for it. With an appropriate car, a man can show people what he is worth:

wealth, power, prestige. If a man wants to belong to a certain social class, he has to drive the cars that people in this social class drive, or even better: drive a faster car than they do! If you look at all of this behavior, you can see that a sports car is indeed some sort of phallic symbol of modernity.
