Bald Head

A human head has about 100,000 hair follicles. On average 100 hairs a day get lost. Some people lose substantially more hair for several reasons. If this process lasts a while, the people affected go bald. From baldness as a result of complete hair loss does not only suffer old men. There are even young people, who have a bald head by nature or caused by an accident or a disease. Some of them make a virtue of necessity. They claim to wear this look intentionally for keeping up with fashion. If there are no more hairs on the scalp, it is called a bald head. In most of the cases a bald head is hereditary. This kind of baldness can develop by several ways.

On the one hand the oil glands as well as the hair follicles of the scalp can deteriorate and the hair becomes thinner

and thinner. Finally only a few downy hairs remain. On the other hand baldness often begins with noticing more and more hairs in the comb. Soon the scalp is visible and the crown of the head is nearly bald. This is the most common kind of hereditary baldness. It mostly appears on men, more than 30 years old. But even younger men and women can suffer from this form of baldness. Sometimes it accompanies the hormonal changes during the aging process. Men become more often bald than women. Other reasons of baldness can be several diseases. For instance there is a disease called alopecia universalis. It causes a complete hair loss from the whole body including eye brows and eyelashes. Mostly baldness is caused by diseases accompanied by high fever.

In former scarlet fevers often caused a sudden loss of hair on the head as well as all over the body.

Further causes of hair loss which ends up in baldness can be malnutrition and poisoning. Besides diseases and heredity bad inviromental conditions can be the reason for a bald head. So nuclear rays, x-rays, chemicals or plummet poisoning can cause a loss of hair. In western culture a bald head often symbolises fast ageing. Therefore many men try to fight their bald head. Most effective are hair transplants.
